Our committee is NOW launching the training phase of our workshops for the veterinarians of King County. The first three training sessions will take a general approach to assist in disaster readiness for all veterinarians, not just those who are registered with the Public Heath Reserve Corps as disaster responders.
These three sessions are scheduled the third Sunday roughly every four months, from 1:00 to 4:00 at The Delta Society in Bellevue (go to www.deltasociety.org for directions). Our first training session is September 20th, to discuss Preparing Your Practice for Disasters. We plan to address critical topics such as business continuity.
On January 17, 2010, our tentative topic will be The Veterinarian’s Role in Community Disaster Preparedness to include preparing your clients and becoming familiar with the kinds of neighborhood programs that already exist. If you are not part of one, it is a good opportunity to learn how to start such a program. This is a good practice builder and helps to distinguish the veterinarian as a community leader.
May 16th 2010 we are planning to emphasize the public health threats that arise in emergencies in a training session entitled Veterinarians: A Collaborative Role With Public Health.
We are also in the planning stages for workshops that are true disaster response training sessions. These will provide more hands-on activities and drills of emergency management and response. Any requests for particular topics are welcome, and we will provide details as they become available.
We request that you RSVP to these workshops. If you have any questions or comments, please contact Susan Mailheau, Disaster Preparedness Committee Chair <Susan.LM@comcast.net> or Ann Whereat, Co-Chair <tralor@circusearth.com>
